True Life

True life…

1. Yesterday, I combed a hair mask through my locks, wore a shower cap and completed a 30-minute yoga video in my living room.

2. Sometimes when you work odd hours, dinner gets weird.

3. It worries me for the children of our country that Kelsey from the Bachelor is a school counselor.

4. My work laptop is so freaking huge, like 18 inches or something. Finding a chic laptop bag that is large enough has been the thorn in my side lately. Send any recos my way, but I’ve got my eye on this one:

4. I wish I craved egg whites in the morning, but I almost always want something carb-y and/or sweet.

5. I like to pretend that I quit ballet yesterday, but really, it was over ten years ago. I may or may not have watched this video five times already. I can’t get the link to imbed, so you’ll have to go here to watch it.

25 Things You Don’t Know About Me

Flowers 25 Things final

I knew my first week of work would be all over the place schedule-wise. Like a good blogger, I drafted a few posts to keep in my queue for busy days. This is one of them.

I’ve had a subscription to US Weekly for many years. Perusing celebrity gossip is one of my guilty pleasures. In the summer, nothing sounds better to me than lying on our pool deck with a stack of trashy magazines. One of my favorite features of US Weekly is the “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me” section. Each week a different celebrity shares a variety of random facts about his or herself.

25 Things

I realized that even though you visit this blog, you likely don’t know a whole lot about me. While I’m definitely not a celeb (ha!), below you’ll find some fun facts about what makes me tick, everything from embarrassing childhood admissions to quirky talents. Enjoy!

25 Things Lizzie

1. I love haunted history and try to visited a haunted place in every city I see.

2. I have a talent for painting my own nails – both hands!

3. Before high school dances, my friends made appointments with me (at my house) to have their hair and makeup done. Before one homecoming, I had eight people scheduled starting at 9 a.m.

4. I have a hard time watching movies that were made before 2000. The screen looks too “scratchy” to me. Bobby still hasn’t accepted this.

5. I studied abroad in Vienna, Austria in college and visited six different countries in seven weekends.

6. My hair is naturally curly and frizzy. I have been straightening it for exactly half my life!

7. I have two older brothers; Jeff is 39 and Garrett is 29.

8. My mom is an interior designer. 😉

9. I would probably choose Kraft Mac ‘N Cheese and a Cobb salad as my last meal on earth.

10. I have God awful seasonal allergies and take three prescriptions year round.

11. Bobby and I met at his company while I was working as a temp there during grad school.

12. When asked what kind of car I wanted as a little girl, I would tell my Dad, “a pink corvette filled with skittles.” Go figure.

13. I danced ballet from the time I was four years old until I was a sophomore in high school. I try not to live with regrets, but I wish I’d never quit!

14. I have a serious phobia of spiders. Seriously. Even typing the “s” word makes me sweat.

15. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was my obsession as a kid/tween.

16. I find showers to be a waste of time. I could lie in a hot bath and read every single day.

17. I am very organized, but somewhat messy at the same time.

18. I have a strange talent of being able to whistle at a very high decibel.

19. When I was little, my mom was changing a light bulb and she was unaware that the wire had a short circuit. The spark shocked her hand and she lost two fingernails. There was blood everywhere! Now I am terrified of changing lightbulbs and have only done it once.

20. Even thought I have a Dad, two brothers and a boyfriend who are avid sports fans, I know very little about sports and care about them even less.

21. When I was in middle school, I thought Britney Spears was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen.

22. I had a pet gerbil named Louis as a kid. Louis was psychotic and you could only pick him up if you wore gardening gloves.

23. I’ve never owned a dog (but I love them!).

24. I was watching horror movies by myself in the dark by the time I was nine. Normal, right?

25. I’ve never had a brain freeze.

I’m tagging Courtney (a fellow sucker for surveys), Chelsey and Claire to play along if you’d like!

7 Places Your Pet Shouldn’t Be

As soon as this post goes live, Bobby and I are headed to the gym (my mom’s gym gave us 7-day guest passes – wahoo!) and then we’re braving the Christmas crowds to do some last minute shopping and gift exchanges. Wish us luck!

Since I’ve been in Louisville, I’ve been loving on my parent’s cat Grayson.

He’s the sweetest little guy, but is nothing like Baxter. Baxter is curious, mischievous and downright manipulative at times (but only in the cutest way). I was making a sandwich yesterday and pulled out the turkey and cheese, fully expecting to have to shield my sandwich from wandering paws…until I remembered that Grayson is a super low key animal and doesn’t beg for food like my fur son. It had me thinking about all the places in our apartment that Baxter loves, but isn’t supposed to be.

  • 1. The sink. He sleeps in there while I’m getting ready for bed and when I’m getting ready for the day.

  • 2. The Christmas tree. The #1 reason why we didn’t get one this year!

  • 3. The refrigerator. If there’s raw chicken or deli turkey in there, he can’t be tamed.

  • 4. The closet. Enough said.

  • 5. Trying to nap on me while I blow dry my hair. I once read somewhere that cats think the hair dryer is hurting you, so they become extra snuggly trying to “protect” you. (I know it’s weird, but I always prop my leg on the counter, as it takes the pressure off my lower back. Yes, I’m 90 years old).

getting ready

  • 6. Under the door. He refuses to be locked out of any room.

  • 7. On my laptop. He must like it because it’s warm, but he used to sit there when I was right in the middle of typing a paper. So annoying!

Weekend Recap

One reason I love being home for extended periods of time is how relaxed I feel. We never have an agenda and just take each day as it comes. Today, I woke up at 10 a.m. and am sitting here in my jammies, sipping on coffee and typing this blog post.

We arrived in Louisville around 4 p.m. on Saturday, just in time to get ready for my friend Leah’s wedding. Leah and I have been gal pals since high school and also lived together for a year in college. She is drop dead gorgeous, hilarious and smart as a whip. I’m so happy for her and her new husband Corey!

College friend Susan, me, high school friends Brooke and Leah

Bobby and I both had such a blast. It felt like a high school reunion and I enjoyed ever minute of it. We chatted with everyone and danced until the wee hours. I was definitely struggling on Sunday morning!

High school friends!

Me & Susan (also a bridesmaid)

Congrats to the Starks! ❤

I realized I took zero pictures yesterday, so you’ll have to use your imagination. Bobby and I headed to Panera for lunch (I ordered the you-pick-two french onion soup + caesar salad) and ran some errands in the afternoon.

My mom hosted a little dinner party at our house last night. My parents have a lot of jewish friends in Louisville, so it has become a tradition over the years to host them around Christmastime. Our guests last night have known me since I was just a twinkle in my parents’ eyes (hi Barbara!), so I always enjoy catching up with them and of course, introducing Bobby this year.

It was a night filled with friends, family and good food. Just how I like it!

Subscription Gift Boxes

Good morning! I hope it is less dreary wherever you are. I’m gearing up for a day filled with studying for my last final + a pedicure + a trip to the post office + a workout. I wonder which will take priority? 😉

I’ve also included for you a round up of my favorite subscription gift boxes based on my own experience. But first let’s cover breakfast, shall we?

My stomach was a little off this morning, so breakfast didn’t happen until about 9:30 a.m. I cut up a honeycrisp apple and peeled a clementine. I’ll likely grab something else in a little while, but fruit was all I was feeling for now.

On to the exciting part of this post!

 Subscription Gift Boxes Final

This has been the year of subscription boxes for me. Last Christmas, the family I nannied for gifted me with a 6-month subscription to Birchbox. As a beauty junkie, I loved my Birchbox and looked forward to seeing it in my mailbox every month. I fell in love with some of the products and still use them now, a year later.

Since then, subscription boxes have been my go-to gift for the special people in my life. They are unique, thoughtful and there is a box for everyone on your list. Finding the perfect gift for someone is one of my favorite tasks in life. For the most part, I always look for something that would be excited to receive, and that I know the person wouldn’t buy for his/herself. I truly think this is the KEY to gift giving!

  • Birchbox – obviously, I’d be including Birchbox in this round up. As far as I know, it was the first personal care subscription box and people love it. My favorite part each month was receiving beauty products that I’d never heard of and couldn’t find in the drugstore. I gifted a 6-month subscription to my mom for her birthday in October, and she sends me a picture of her box each month!

  • Love with Food – the perfect box for the healthy foodie in your life. Each month, the recipient opens a curated box of natural or organic snacks tailored to his/her taste. For every snack box gifted, you are donating a meal to a hungry child in the U.S. It’s a win-win! I purchased a Love with Food subscription for my sister-in-law’s birthday a few months ago. She recently texted me this photo and said that the snacks were so good that she’d have to hide them from her husband (my brother!)

love with food

  • BarkBox – your pup will enjoy “anything from toys, bones and all-natural treats to hygiene products and innovative new gadgets.” Ok, I’ve never given this one, but am just waiting for the right opportunity. I think it would make the perfect gift for someone with a new puppy. Kind of like a housewarming gift for the new addition 🙂

Buzz Feed recently published a list of twenty fantastic subscription boxes everyone needs in their lives.

1. Graze

2. Birchbox

3. Conscious Box

4. The Cravory

5. BarkBox

6. Julep Maven

7. Love with Food

8. Whimseybox

9. Club W

10. Citrus Lane

11. Bulu Box

12. BroBox

13. Tea Sparrow

14. Taste Trunk

15. Escape Monthly

16. Quince and Apple Cocktail Box

17. Dollar Shave Club

18. Green Kids Craft

19. Pop Sugar Must Have Box

20. MistoBox

If you need an idea for how to actually gift the box to the receiver, I created this flyer in PowerPoint and wrapped it like a regular present when I gave my mom BirchBox in October.

  • Have you ever gifted a subscription box?
  • Which one from the above list do you want in your stocking? <– I’d love Graze or the PopSugar box!

Graduation Celebration

Good morning! How are ya? I’m moving a little slower today after 2+ glasses of wine last night. I swear, I don’t know what happened, but I cannot hang like I used to!

The graduation celebration last night way exceeded my expectations. Bobby and I had a blast hanging out with my friends, their husbands and family members. These three girls and I had our first ever grad school class together two years ago and have stayed on the same trajectory ever since. Don’t know what I would have done without them during those demanding periods of working full-time + night school.

Two shorties + two tall girls = Humera, Allison, Jordan, me

I completely forgot to RSVP to the event, so when they called the graduates names I wasn’t sure I’d be included. But they ended up tacking my name onto the end of the list and I snagged my little gift, a university-branded travel mug.

coffee mug2

I’ve been on the lookout for a new tumbler since mine is five years old and on it’s last leg. We’ll see if this one stands up to the no-leaking-keep-coffee-hot test. Have I mentioned yet that I love free stuff?

Our group was the last to leave and the maintenance staff was basically cleaning up around us. You could say it was a success.

me and bobby2

The food spread at the event was pretty impressive and I tried to take some photos, but they just turned out fugly. Imagine fried wontons, sliders, egg rolls, cheese plate, cookies, baked mac ‘n cheese, crudités and fruit. I wasn’t too hungry since it was earlier than I’m used to eating dinner, but I did chow down on a plate of fruit. I was pretty hungry when I arrived home around 7:30 (Bobby had left from the party for another holiday work event), so I heated up an Amy’s frozen burrito . The black bean & rice flavor was a little lackluster, so I ate about half before I threw a frozen pizza in the oven. We buy Gino’s East frozen pizzas and they are Bobby’s all-time favorite. I told him I ate “his” pizza last night and he adamantly suggested that I stop at the store and buy him another one today 🙂

I’ve only exercised once this week, so I’m planning to hit the gym later this afternoon after my classes. We’ll see how that goes. Fortunately, my Class Pass membership restarts on the 4th of every month, so I can take my beloved Fly Wheel classes again.

I hope you have a great rest of your day!
