Reader Request: What I Wore my First Week of Work

What I Wore to Work collage

I remember when I was hired for my first full-time job. I was a freshman in college and home for the summer. I signed on as a marketing intern for one of the¬†fortune 500 companies in Kentucky. I was used to wearing leggings and sorority sweatshirts all day everyday and was in for a shock when I had to start dressing in business casual attire Monday through Friday. I thought that meant black pants, button downs and cardigans, so my mom and I headed to LOFT to overhaul my wardrobe. I’m pretty sure I bought the same “work trousers” in black, navy and brown. I still cringe when I think of my weekly wardrobe during those days (and for the record, my mom still buys me cardigans ūüėČ ).

Fortunately, I’ve become a little more creative in my work wear. Of all the occasions to dress for, I actually enjoy putting together a business casual look. I find that the majority of my¬†closet is tailored towards career clothes, which makes it easy to conceptualize an outfit every morning. Now, if you asked me to dress for a casual weekend brunch, I would end up in yoga pants and an oversized Patagonia. I just can’t get a handle on “weekend wear.”

While I am definitely not a fashion blogger, I do love nice clothes, style and shopping¬†as much as the next girl.¬†The catch is that I’m a bargain hunter.¬†If I want that $1,000 handbag, I¬†will wait for it to go on sale or track it down on eBay. Lately, I’ve been all about buying investment pieces, items that might be pricey, but that I will wear more than once per week, are highly versatile and will last me for years to come.

I recently received a message on Facebook from a¬†college friend (hi Katie!). She was interested in where I bought the clothing items from one of my recent posts.¬†This is an exciting moment for The Magic Tree, as today’s post is my first Reader Request!¬†(If there is something you’d like to see on the blog, please let me know!). Without further ado, a roundup of everything I wore to work during my first week.

Household “Chores” Take a Back Seat + Cyber Monday Buys

If you’re ever naive¬†enough to think I’m one of those people that has it together, please take a look at this photo:

Everything is exactly where I left it when we arrived home on Saturday night. I call that talent. In reality, I have been in finals mode for three days now. All my regular “chores” have been lowest on my priority list.¬†Hence, this note that I found in the kitchen this morning:

(Please don’t think Bobby is some demanding “man of the house.” We’ve discussed multiple times that I prefer to do all the laundry because I’m picky about how things are washed and dried!).¬†I always, always get our laundry done on Sundays. It’s just part of the schedule I’ve set for myself. Welp, not this week, and apparently he has no clothes.

Just get me through Thursday and life will be a little less crazy ūüôā

A cold, creamy smoothie was calling my name this morning.

I threw the following into the blender: 1/2 frozen banana, frozen strawberries, unsweetened almond milk, About Time vanilla protein powder. So tasty! Also enjoyed a cup of joe on the side. I’m still on the Pumpkin train and want to use up my Dunkin before I buy a holiday flavor.

I’m trying to work on another paper through the morning, while also incessantly tracking my Cyber Monday¬†purchases.¬†I ended up ordering a couple pieces of jewelry from Gilt¬†<–affiliate link¬†(for gifts, so not posting links!), some random Amazon items including a scratching post, a computer sleeve and Smarty Pants multi-vitamins. I’ve also recently been checking out Talbots sales on the reg and ended up buying this belt for $12. My parents will find it hilarious that I shop at Talbots now. When I was a pre-teen, my dad thought I was dressing too old for my age (I probably was), so he bought me a pair of long, khaki shorts from Talbots. I promised I’d wear them, but they sat unworn at the bottom of my drawer for years! Sorry Dad :/

I’m most excited about this dress I ordered from Bluefly that I plan to wear to Bobby’s company holiday party next week and my friend’s wedding at the end of the month.

I rented a Black Halo cocktail dress from Rent the Runway a few months ago, and loved it so much that I tried to buy it.¬†After realizing that it was from a past season and literally doesn’t exist on the interwebs, I’ve been hunting for a similar style ever since. I hope I love this one just as much.

Off to try and be productive. Also, who else is excited for the VS Fashion Show?

Good morning! I was¬†up bright and early today to check out the best Cyber Mondays deals that are circulating the internet. I’m sure there are many more deals out there, so make sure to google “STORE NAME and cyber monday coupon code” before you check out on any¬†site. I’ve never been a big Black Friday shopper – I think I’ve done it once? – but¬†I always take advantage of Cyber Monday. So I’ve made my list, and I’ve checked it twice, let’s find out which deals are naughty or nice!

Outfit Inspo: Knit Cape

Over the years, Pinterest has quickly¬†become¬†my main source of fashion inspiration. When I was in high school and college, I used to keep¬†binders full of magazine clippings featuring outfits that I wanted to recreate. I like to think I was ahead of the technology curve.¬†Today, I took a cue from some of the looks on my “Weekend Fashion” board (<– these looks don’t have to be worn on the weekend obvi, they just have a more relaxed vibe!), and decided to rock my knit cape.

I first saw this identical cape + tee on Penny Pincher Fashion a few months ago and decided I needed to add them to my winter wardrobe.

Has anyone noticed my affinity for skinny pants + loose sweaters yet? For F21, the cape feels thick and high quality, and is actually warm! I’m kind of in love. Sadly, the tee and cape are both sold out, but F21 has some other great options.

I was also inspired by these other cape/poncho looks, and plan to recreate some of them as well.

Have you tried the cape trend yet?

FYI – I saw on Twitter that Argo Tea is offering $5 off your purchase if you download their new app. I did so today, and enjoyed a new-to-me Earl Grey Vanilla Cream.¬†Take advantage, ya’ll!

What I Wore: Charity Event Edition

Hi friends. Hope your weekend has been equal parts fun and rest. Ours sure has been.

Today we’ve been recuperating from the festivities of last night. There’s been a lot of couch time, some Netflix, and at least one nap. Eats today have also been very random (and un-pictured) – handfuls of SkinnyPop, string cheese, frozen fruit, pretzels and a Quest bar. Since today included a lackluster performance in the meals and fitness departments, let’s move on.

One of the many reasons I started this little blog is to share my interest¬†in attainable¬†fashion, knack for “shopping” my own closet, and down right skill at finding a bargain. Therefore, I’m planning to start a series on¬†here called What I Wore, showcasing items that I (typically) already own, or at least can show you were to buy. We’ll start with last night’s look.

(Excuse the grainy iPhone quality on all of these. I’m heading to Best Buy tomorrow to pick up a new camera cord)!

My favorite part of my outfit was¬†this teal coat.¬†I bought it at consignment last spring, but hadn’t yet had a chance to wear it.

I wore a lip color that I was much darker in the tube, and I probably would have preferred darker, but it was still a nice contrast to the black and white.

I’m drawn towards gold jewels most of the year, but in winter I always bring out my silver. My shoes are hard to see, but I ended up going with the Dolce Vita sandals from yesterday’s post. Since they are suede and such a dark shade of black, they worked perfectly with my tights.

The whole venue looked gorgeous, but my favorite part were the tasting stations from some of Chicago’s top restaurants. It’s hard to snap pics while carry a drink + a clutch + a plate full of food (if someone has a trick for this, please let me know), but I nibbled on truffle mac-and-cheese and an eggroll.

I wish I had a better photo of Kristin’s dress, but she looked beautiful in a dark green satin number and a¬†fab statement necklace!

Such a great night!

  • Dress: ASOS
  • Shoes: Dolce Vita via Nordstrom (<–found them cheaper than the link I used in yesterday’s post)
  • Tights: Hue
  • Clutch: Aldo via consignment; similar
  • Coat: Banana Republic via consignment; similar; ¬†similar
  • Earrings: Charming Charlie
  • Rings: glass ring (via gifted) &¬†David Yurman (via gifted)

How to Wear White in Winter

And…….we’re officially into the¬†weekend!

I promised you a fashion post and we’ll get to it in just a bit, but first, let’s cover lunch.

I packed ahead,¬†including leftover spaghetti squash¬†and a honeycrisp apple. Of course, I¬†nabbed a few of these for dessert. ūüôā

I also grabbed some random handfuls of crackers and chips throughout the afternoon in order to satisfy my carb-tooth. Now, on to the exciting part of this post.

As mentioned earlier, Bobby and I are attending my friend Kristin’s event tonight. She is on the junior board of a¬†children’s hospitals, and they’re throwing a cocktail party to benefit pediatric cancer research. I almost used my old standby,¬†Rent the Runway¬†(<–affiliate link), but decided to shop my own closet instead.

I wore this dress from ASOS for a “white party” at the end of summer.

step n repeat

When I bought the dress, I had every intention¬†of wearing it¬†into¬†winter, and tonight seems like the perfect occasion. I haven’t decided my exact game plan in terms of “winterizing” it, but I have some ideas.

  • Swap bare legs for tights¬†– obviously a no brainer when the temps are in the low 30s, plus tights can dress up anything. I may go very dark black, but likely something a little more sheer.

black tights        VS.        sheer black

Source & Source

  • Add in a more substantial¬†black heel – ¬†Your shoes and tights should always fall into the same color palette to elongate your legs. In this case, black on black. I’m actually lacking in the black heel department (weird, right?), but would like to go for this look (minus a few inches on the heel).

lily collins

  • Use a darker bag¬†– when I first wore the white dress, I was trying to stay with the theme. But¬†since we’re bordering on the winter season (crying), a purse with a dark print¬†or interesting fabric will work best – think leopard, suede or metallic.

  • ¬†Make your lips and nails a darker¬†shade¬†– winter is THE time to play with makeup colors. When I wore this¬†white dress in September, I did a light pink lip and nude nails. This time around, I’ll probably wear¬†dark gray nails and a much darker lip.

If you have anything in your closet that you think could work for all seasons,¬†then I hope my tips help! As always, if you have any specific questions, I’m happy to answer them. I have about three hours to figure out what exactly I’m going to wear tonight, but stay tuned tomorrow for the end result.

Have a fabulous Friday night.

Outfit Inspo: Olivia Palermo

Hi guys!

I hope it’s much warmer where you are today. We got our first taste of winter today with temps in the 30s and lots o’ wind. I never know how to dress during this transitional time of year, as evidenced by my choice of coat today.

I am also a bag lady

I wore my trench that is meant for light rain, but actually needed a hat, gloves and wool coat instead. Oh well. For those of you that follow me on¬†Instagram, you saw that I based today’s¬†outfit off one of my style icons, Olivia Palermo.

My look:

  • Chambray shirt – Gap (old)
  • Sweater – Michael Kors (old via TJ Maxx)
  • Jeans – Paige Denim (old via consignment)
  • Shoes – Keds (via Nordstrom Rack; similar)
  • Bag – Gigi New York

I pinned Olivia’s outfit¬†to my “Weekend Fashion” board on Pinterest¬†because I love how it’s laid back, yet still put together. I already had everything in my closet, so this was easy to recreate.

For an alternative, I’d like to switch out the jeans for¬†black skinny pants, the shoes for pointy-toe leopard flats, and the bag for a more structured tote to reflect an overall business-casual look.

I packed up my coffee and lunch bag, and headed to campus for a full day of classes.

Sitting in classrooms from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. calls for lots of good snacks, so I always plan ahead. I ate my breakfast while waiting for class to start.

This picture does not look too appetizing, but I promise it was. I bake a dozen of these egg white muffins every¬†Sunday for grab-and-go breakfasts/snacks throughout the week. They stay really well in the fridge; just nuke them in the microwave for 30 seconds and you’re good to go! I’ll post a full recipe in the next couple of days.

Halfway through my first class, I snacked on a bunch of mini pretzel¬†crisps. I should have known they wouldn’t tide me over for very long, because around 12:30 p.m., I dug into my lunch.

whole lunch2

I packed a pear, my SmartyPants multi-vitamins, and a salad I threw together consisting of romaine + carrots + 1/4 avocado + unsalted almonds/peanuts + reduced sugar craisins + Bolthouse Farms yogurt ranch dressing.

I love colorful salads!

I headed to Starbucks in between my afternoon classes because I needed a major pick-me-up in the form of an iced coffee with one pump pumpkin spice.

I brought my own almond milk and truvia, and enjoyed my caffeine with a chocolate chip cherry torte Lara bar on the side (one of my fave flavors).

In terms of exercise, today actually became an unplanned rest day (I’m all about resting my body, especially after an intense spin class like yesterday’s). Because I got home later then I’d planned this evening, we decided to order sushi and catch up on our DVR instead. Sounds like the perfect night to me.

I’m going to a spin class tomorrow morning, followed by babysitting during the day, then¬†we have plans to attend my friend Kristin’s charity event¬†in the evening. I’m definitely looking forward to the weekend, even though it’s supposed to snow. Say¬†what?!

Enjoy the rest of your night!

I Wouldn’t Touch an Olive With a Ten-Foot Pole

Hey guys! Hope you’re hump day is going great. This morning, I had plans to attend a spin class, but ended up canceling it late last night and reserving the same class for this afternoon. I’m happy with my decision considering this morning was absolutely gorgeous.

When you’re on the balcony, Baxter is never far behind. Can you spot him?

I enjoyed my coffee on the balcony in the glorious sunshine. But then I remembered that we have no porch furniture, and drinking my coffee standing up didn’t sound as good as drinking it sitting down. Baxie agreed.

baxie sun

I spent the morning catching up on my favorite blogs and news sites. I am¬†so¬†happy that election commercials will simmer down now. Those things are in such poor taste and I can’t even stand to watch them. It’s cool that we have a new governor. Change is good sometimes.

Kimberly at Penny Pincher Fashion shared some fabulous picks from the Nordstrom fall clearance sale. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), I had no clue this sale was happening. Though I would love this and these¬†and this, I’m going to refrain¬†from buying anything and put myself on¬†an austerity plan until Christmas.

After about an hour of perusing blogs, hunger struck. I threw the following ingredients into the blender to make a breakfast smoothie: handful of spinach + 1/2 C unsweetened vanilla almond milk + 1/2 banana + 1/2 C frozen cherries and blueberries +1 scoop About Time vanilla protein powder + 5 ice cubes.

The rest of the morning included lots of this,

pink pad2

And this,

computer work2

For a break, I went out downstairs to pick up our dry cleaning and mail before assembling a salad for lunch. Bobby ordered dinner last night for himself, but he needed me to also get something in order to hit the delivery minimum. I had already eaten my own early dinner, so I ordered a salad to be consumed for lunch today. Talk about meal planning!

I had to bribe Baxter with a piece of chicken on the floor so I could take this photo

It consisted of romaine lettuce + mozzarella + provolone + grilled chicken + red peppers + tomatoes + chickpeas + olives + croutons + a creamy greek dressing. I removed the olives because I hate them, and the croutons because they were soggy. I ended up eating all the toppings and some of the lettuce (like I always seem to do) mostly because the whole thing had a hint of olive-taste which I cannot handle. I added a pear on the side to make it a more fulfilling lunch.

Lunch got me thinking about which foods I dislike. For me, it’s all kinds of olives, mushrooms (though I like the soup?), grapefruit and pumpkin pie. I remember absolutely¬†loving olives as a kid too.¬†And I adored¬†shrimp as a child, couldn’t stand it as a teen, and now it’s one of my favorites. Taste buds are weird little creatures.¬†What about you?

  • What foods do you hate the smell/texture/taste of?¬†
  • Are there any foods you¬†hated as a kid, but like now? Or vice versa?

I’ll be back later with a dinner and workout post. Have a great afternoon!

A Jam-packed Monday

Hi there!

Today was quite the productive Monday full of paper writing, two meetings, a quick workout and a healthy dinner tag teamed by Bobby and yours truly. But first,

The past few mornings I’ve woken up with major carb cravings and I don’t know why. I’m not much of an oatmeal girl, so I usually resort to¬†cereal or a breakfast sammy (like yesterday’s). This morning, I poured a bowl of Kashi Heart to Heart Honey Toasted cereal with 1/2 banana + unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I love Kashi for the natural ingredients, and this particular kind for the low sugar.

After devouring breakfast, I spent some time – admittedly in my jammies – working on a paper that I have due this week and watching the Today Show. Meghan Trainor was on to¬†sing¬†All About That Bass.¬†I guess I’m new to that train, but what a great song! I felt myself smiling like a goober while actually listening to the lyrics.

I’m all about that female empowerment!

I jumped in the shower to get ready for¬†my lunch meeting that was just a few blocks from our place. Since, I haven’t been working since my internship ended in October, I had fun putting together a business casual outfit. Ha!

After lunch, I headed straight to the cutest little coffee shop where I had planned to meet a new mom for whom I might start babysitting. I was sitting there for a good ten minutes before I realized that I hadn’t changed my watch to reflect Daylight Savings, and was an hour early! I ordered a mango iced tea and scavenged in my purse for the chocolate I’d saved from lunch, and browsed Pinterest until our actual meeting time. It turned in to a nice like hour of relaxation.

After my meeting, I spent a good ten minutes bobbing and weaving through¬†workmen around Michigan Avenue who were stringing Christmas tree lights. Is it¬†really that time of year already? Not that I’m complaining! I’ll probably tune my Pandora to the Holiday Pop station in the next few weeks ūüôā

I quickly changed into workout clothes when I got home after briefly catching up with Bobby. Our weight room has been closed for construction, so I’ve been doing more cardio than usual lately if I’m not taking a Class Pass class. I used this workout that has been sitting on my Pinterest board for a while now. I¬†never¬†run at 6.5, so this was more challenging than I’d expected!

Bobby and I threw together a speedy dinner – Amylu cheddar turkey burgers and side salads (chopped romaine + cucumber + carrot + craisins + almonds + Bolthouse Farms yogurt ranch). I was so hungry that I completely forgot to snap a picture, but I did get capture evidence of my post-dinner handful of Garrett’s Popcorn ūüėČ

The savory-sweet combo is SO addicting!

We’re currently watching¬†Girl Interrupted¬†and I have plans to make my favorite pumpkin mug cake for dessert. I’m hoping to get in some yoga before my school day starts tomorrow, even if it’s part of a DVD or YouTube video. Here’s to a just-as-productive-Tuesday!
